Cold and refreshing, homemade lemonade is absolutely the BEST way to beat the heat!

Today’s recipe is all about sitting back, enjoying the warmth and soaking in long summer days. I make this sugar-free lemonade almost every week when the weather is warm! It’s perfect for summer cookouts, pool parties, or to sip on a lazy Saturday sitting out on the patio. It’s super easy and tastes so much better than the store bought kind.

Pour yourself a cold glass of this sweet lemon deliciousness, grab a good book and head out to relax in the backyard hammock. The stuff summer dreams are made of, I tell ya! Now I just need that hammock!

How do you make sugar-free lemonade?

To make sugar-free lemonade, you’ll need water, lemons and monkfruit (or another preferred sweetener).

Many recipes call for the sugar or sweetener to simply be added to the lemon juice, but I find it works best to make a quick simple syrup. This will ensure that the sweetener is thoroughly combined with the water and you won’t end up with any grainy bits of monkfruit in your drink.

To make your simple syrup, you’ll need to combine water and monkfruit, and then heat until the monkfruit has dissolved. You’ll then combine the simple syrup with fresh lemon juice, more water and ice. That’s all there is to it!

This Sugar-Free Lemonade is:

Perfectly tangy
So refreshing
Lightly sweetened
And so simple to make!

Fabulous for summer barbecues, brunches, showers or just hanging around the house. This sugar-free lemonade recipe will quickly become one of your favorites, as it already has become one of mine! Bring on your sweltering heat, summer. With this drink, I’m ready!

Oat milk is a delicious dairy-free milk that is crazy easy to make. It’s nut-free, low in fat, very affordable and comes together in just minutes.  Let me show you how-to make oat milk in your very own kitchen!

oatmeal + milk

Oat milk has been gaining in popularity lately and for good reason.  It’s rich, creamy, and delicious PLUS it’s a plant based, nut-free alternative to milk.

It’s also a relatively inexpensive milk to make and you don’t need any fancy equipment to make it.  And my absolute favorite thing about homemade oat milk?? You can make oatmeal pulp chocolate chip cookies with the leftover oat pulp, but we’ll get to that in a minute.

How To Make Oat Milk That Is NOT SLIMY

As easy as it it is to make homemade oat milk, the obstacle to overcome is the slime factor.  How do you make home made oat milk that is rich and creamy but not slimy?  Here are a few tips:

  • Do not soak your oats.  I noticed a lot of recipes online suggest soaking the oats before blending. I found this made the milk more slimy.  I do not recommend soaking the oats ahead of time.
  • Do not over-blend.  The oats break down pretty quickly once blended.  As soon as you see they have broken down, shut off the blender and move on.  Over blending will definitely result in slimy oats.
  • Avoid squeezing or pressing the oats.  When it’s time to strain the oats, you want to let the milk drip through at its own pace.  If you squeeze the bag or use a spoon to push the oats through a strainer, they tend to become more slimy.
  • Do not heat your oat milk.  I’m not sure why store bought oat milk is delicious when heated (I assume there is something added to it) but homemade oat milk thickens and becomes slimy when heated.  I recommend using oat milk for cold recipes like; in smoothies, over cereal or granola, to make chocolate milk, or in an iced coffee.

straining oat milk

How To Make Oat Milk

Making oat is as easy as can be (even easier than making almond milk).  Simply add 1 cup rolled oats + 4 cups water to a high-speed blender (or any blender you have) and blend on high for 20-30 seconds. Then pour through a nut bag or a fine mesh strainer.

Be sure to mess with the oats too much.  Don’t squish, squeeze or push them around.  This leads to slimy oat milk.  The less you mess with the oats, the creamier your oat milk will be.

Oh! And that leftover oat pulp, don’t throw it away.  You can use it to make some delicious cookies.

oats, vanilla, maple syrup + salt

Common Questions

How long does oat milk last?

Oatmeal will last up to 5 days in the refrigerator, when kept in an airtight container (I like using mason jars!).
Well sealed in the refrigerator, oat milk should last about 5 days. You’ll know it’s gone bad when it smells funny.

Is oat milk gluten-free?

If you buy certified gluten-free oats, your oat milk will be gluten free.

Is oat milk healthy?

Healthy is such a subjective term!  But I like that oat milk is plant based and derived from rolled oats.  It’s definitely a great choice for anyone wanting a nut-free, dairy-free, vegan milk substitute.

Is oat milk good for baking?

Oat milk had a sweet, mild flavor that is comparable to low fat cow’s milk.  It would work well in your baking recipes.

What can I do with oat pulp?

Why, make my oatmeal pulp chocolate chip cookies, of course!

Cold-brew iced tea is easy to make, super refreshing and has a clean, smooth finish that you just can’t get with traditional tea. Plus, you can make it ahead and keep it in your fridge for days.

There is nothing more refreshing than a glass of homemade iced tea on a hot summer day.  It’s light, clean, and refreshing and could not be any easier to make.

Why Cold Brewing Makes The Best Iced Tea

Heat brings out the tannic, bitter flavors in tea (and in coffee!).  Without the heat, you end up with a very smooth, light, and refreshing tea with a flavor that just can’t be beaten.

This is why I always cold brew my iced tea and recommend you do the same.  Other than it being the best-tasting tea, it’s also the easiest to make.

Let me show you how.

cold brew iced tea

How To Make Cold Brew Iced Tea

This method for making iced tea is as easy as it gets!  I like to use one tea bag for every 8 ounces of water.  If you like a super-strong brew, reduce the water to 6 ounces per teabag.

  • Place 8 tea bags in the bottom of a glass container or pitcher.  I like using this container because it has a lid.  But I also own a glass pitcher (similar to this one), which I use when serving friends and family.
  • Pour 8 cups of cold or room temperature water over the tea bags and give it a gentle stir.
  • Pop the lid on the container and place it in the refrigerator for a minimum of eight hours (maximum 12 hours).
  • Remove the tea bags and enjoy your tea.
  • Serve over ice with fresh lemon. Enjoy!

What Tea Should I Use For Making Iced Tea

For traditional iced tea, you want to use black tea.  You can choose any brand that you like, but remember, the better the quality of the tea you use, the better the flavor will be for your iced tea.

I love using earl grey tea.  Earl Grey is a black tea that is infused with bergamot oil which has a light, citrus flavor that makes for a delicious iced tea.

Also, keep in mind that you can use this method to make any type of iced tea you enjoy.  Some of my favorites are green tea, lemon verbena tea, chamomile tea, peach tea, and/or mint.

How To Sweeten Iced Tea Without Sugar

I like to drink my iced tea slightly sweetened but I don’t like using white refined sugar to sweeten my tea.

Liquid Stevia

My personal favorite way to sweeten cold-brewed iced tea is with liquid stevia.  Stevia is a sugar-free, plant-based substitute for traditional sugars that has no calories and will not affect blood sugar levels (this is the one I’ve been using).

It’s perfect for iced tea because it’s already in liquid form, so it stirs right into the tea. I find using somewhere between 6-8 drops makes for a perfectly sweetened glass of iced tea.

Honey

Another option for sweetening your iced tea without using refined sugar is to use honey.  I find you can sweeten an entire batch of iced tea with just 3-4 tablespoons of honey (depending on your taste preferences of course!).

Just be sure that you add some warm water to the honey before stirring it into your iced tea.  this way the honey will dissolve and easily stir into your iced tea without turning into honey clumps.

As much as I love a visit to a coffee shop, I don’t always love the price tags that come along with them.  Plus I often find, specialty coffee house drinks are too sweet for me, so recreating them home becomes a #winwin  (saves money + puts me in charge of all the ingredients).

Here are simple remakes of 4 delicious hot Starbucks drinks; Pumpkin Spice Latte, Chai Tea Latte, Salted Caramel Latte, + Mocha Latte.

pumpkin spice latte

A personal favorite of mine, is the famous #PSL, also known as a Pumpkin Spice Latte.

This DIY version is so easy to make and can easily be scaled up if you are sharing with some friends or family.

Chai Tea Latte

I kept things super simple with this Chai Spiced Latte and used a couple of chai tea bags to infuse all of the exotic chai flavors.

Quick to make and super comforting, this will be a go-to of mine through the colder months.

[ewd_recipe id=”chai”]

Salted Caramel Latte

This Salted Caramel Latte definitely feels decadent and delicious, especially with a bit of whipped cream and extra caramel over the top.

[ewd_recipe id=”caramel”]

Mocha Latte

How could we possibly wrap this up without some chocolate?  I truly don’t know and lucky for us we don’t need to know because this my friends, is the simplified C+D recipe for a Mocha Latte.

Homemade hemp milk is rich, creamy, and just like almond milk, makes a great plant based alternative to dairy milk.

And I just love how easy it is to make.  It’s even easier then almond milk, because there is no soaking or straining involved.

Simply add the hemp seeds to the blender with some filtered water and flavor boosters, and in less then 60 seconds, you will have homemade hemp milk.  How cool is that?

Try using your hemp milk in smoothies, oatmeal, or on top of your cereal.  Really, you can use it anywhere you would use milk.

Note:  hemp milk only lasts about three days in the fridge, so working in small batches is best.

Mixed Berry Hemp Seed Protein Smoothie – a nutrient-packed, filling combination of berries, vanilla protein powder, and superfood hemp seeds (with good for you fats) that can be whipped up in a blender in only a few minutes for a healthy breakfast on the go.

mixed berry and hemp seed smoothie in glass jar

I love a healthy, tasty recipe that is both easy to make and can be enjoyed on-the-go.  This Berry & Hemp Protein Shake is definitely one of those recipes.  With just a few ingredients mixed in the blender, you have a nutritious breakfast (or even snack!) ready to go in minutes.  This smoothie is so delicious you’ll forget it’s a healthy, protein-packed shake.

Did you know that just three tablespoons of hemp seeds has nearly 10 grams of protein?  That makes hemp seeds a great plant-based, protein-packed addition to smoothies (move over protein powders, we’ve got a new kid on the block!). Because of this high protein content, this smoothie will keep you full much longer than most fruit smoothies.   Not only do you have the health benefits of the hemp seeds, but with the antioxidants, fiber, and vitamin C in the mixed berries, this shake is a delicious, nutritional treat!

Why You’ll Love This Hemp Protein Shake Recipe

  • You only need one thing – a blender!  This makes for easy cleanup.
  • It aids in healthy digestion.
  • This hemp berry shake is packed with protein and healthy nutrients.
  • With its protein content, this smoothie will keep you full for hours.
  • It doesn’t take long to make and can be enjoyed on the go.
  • It’s a delicious combination of vanilla and berry flavors – yum!

Equipment Needed To Make Hemp Mixed Berry Smoothie

  • Blender – I like to use a high speed blender (this is the one I have) but any blender will get the job done.

Ingredients For Your Hemp Berry Smoothie

  • 2 cups frozen mixed berries
  • 2 cups unsweetened almond milk (or any milk you prefer)
  • 1/4 cup hemp seeds
  • 1 serving vanilla protein powder

How To Make A Hemp Protein Smoothie

Step 1: Combine all ingredients into a blender and blend until you have a thick, creamy smoothie. Add an extra splash of water (or more milk) to thin out as needed.

Step 2: Serve and enjoy!

Tips

Remember, whenever you are making a smoothie, ALWAYS use frozen fruit.  The result?   A rich, creamy, smoothie that won’t get watered down with a bunch of ice.

step-by-step photos to make mixed berry and hemp seed protein smoothie

What to Serve/Pair with Your Hemp Protein Shake Recipe

This shake is very filling on its own, but I know that sometimes you just crave something a little extra to go with it.  To keep this a nutritious meal, pair it with some harboiled eggs for a bit of extra protein.

Another protein-packed option to enjoy to pair with this smoothie is a handful of raw almonds.

You can also add some veggies into this smoothie! No so much a pairing, but an eays way to add more volume and nutrients.  Think frozen cauliflower, baby spianch or avocado!

Popular Substitutions & Additions

For this smoothie, I added a few tablespoons of hemp seeds in place of protein powder and was super excited with the results.  Rich, creamy, cold, and delicious (and 100% plant-based and vegan!)

Want your smoothie to be extra smooth and creamy?  Add in half of a frozen banana or a scoop of avocado.  This will also give you some extra nutrients!  You can even add in a scoop of frozen cauliflower for a thicker, creamy texture.

I like to top my smoothie with raw, shaved coconut or a dash of chia seeds on top, just to give it something a little extra.

How To Store Your Hemp Protein Smoothie

While this mixed berry protein shake tastes best when you enjoy it fresh, it can also be stored for up to two days in the fridge.  Just make sure that it’s in an air-tight container.  You can drink your leftover smoothie straight out of the fridge, just give it a little stir first.

You can also store your smoothie in a sealed container in the freezer for up to 3 weeks.  Let it soften in the fridge before enjoying.  If it is too “slushy,” you can add more milk and throw it in the blender until it’s smooth again.

Mixed Berry & Hemp Seed Protein Smoothie FAQs

Can I use another frozen fruit other than berries?

Sure.  If berries aren’t your thing, you can try this with any other frozen fruit.  I think that it would also be delicious with frozen, mixed tropical fruit.

What’s the difference between hemp seeds and chia seeds?

Hemp and chia seeds are very similar, especially in appearance and texture.  They’re both tiny and have a crunch to them.  Hemp seeds are creamier and have more calories than chia seeds but pack in more protein per calorie.  They both contain healthy fats, with chia containing more omega-3 and hemp containing more omega-6. Chia seeds come from the chia plant, scientifically known as Salvia hispanica. Hemp seeds come from the hemp plant, scientifically known as Cannabis sativa.

Where can I find hemp seeds?

You can find these in the organic section at most grocery stores.  If you have a Whole Foods near you, they have a wide variety to choose from.  And of ocourse, you can alwasy order them on Amazon.

Does it matter what brand of protein powder I use?

Yes and no.  Since this smoothie is vegan, you’ll want to choose a plant based protein powder (like this one).  If you are not vegan, you could opt for a whey protein powder (like this one).

I always recommend that you look for high quality protein powders with minimal ingredients.

Can I add greens to this hemp shake?

Sure!  I’m all for adding greens to just about anything.  Mix in raw kale or spinach for some extra nutrition.  Keep in mind that this addition may require additional liquid in this recipe.  Just add milk (or water) a little at a time until you’ve reached the consistency that you want.

Is this smoothie vegan-friendly?

It sure is! Just be sure to use your favorite vegan protein powder (I like this one and this one) or add some extra hemp in place of the protein.

Matcha is a young, delicate, high-grade green tea leaf grown in the shade for about three weeks before it’s handpicked, dried, and ground into a fine powder.

During the time it’s grown in the shade the plant produces very high levels of chlorophyll which is a plant-based pigment that is not only responsible for matcha’s beautiful bright green color but also packs the leaves full of nutrients and antioxidants.

The shade also creates an amino acid called L-Theanine, which is the magic ingredient found in matcha, said to reduce anxiety, and enhance your mood while boosting, concentration, focus, and alertness.

Unlike traditional green tea, with matcha tea, you are actually consuming the whole leaf which is part of the reason why it’s such a nutritional powerhouse and considered a superfood!  It’s actually one of the highest graded foods when it comes to antioxidant concentration. And remember antioxidants are what fight off free radicals in the body!

Not only are they preventative but they also support healthy glowing skin, control blood sugar, lower cholesterol, and increase our metabolism (which is why you will often hear people say that matcha supports weight loss).

Matcha does contain caffeine but because of the way the body digests matcha the caffeine is released at a very slow and steady rate, so rather than getting a big jittery boost and then a crash, it gives us a more natural, sustained boost of energy over a longer period of time.

So if caffeine doesn’t normally agree with you, you may find that you have a different experience with matcha.

Categorically there are two main types of matcha; ceremonial and culinary.

Ceremonial matcha is made from the finest, youngest green tea leaves which give it a delicate, refreshing, and naturally sweet flavor. It is ideal for enjoying simply as a tea or an iced tea.

When looking at ceremonial matcha, it should have vibrantly green color with a light, fresh, and slightly grassy smell.   It should also be extremely fine to the touch and feel like eye shadow. If it smells off or is grainy or dull, it’s not the real deal.

Culinary Matcha on the other hand is a mix of younger and older tea leaves and so while it’s still has a fresh flavor, it tends to be a bit more earthy and robust.

Culinary grade matcha can look less vibrant green than ceremonial matcha but should still be a beautiful green. Just like ceremonial grade, a quality cooking grade matcha should smell fresh and slightly grassy and still feel fine and smooth.  If it feels coarse or you can see the individual grains of matcha easily, it is not good.

And because culinary matcha usually has a lower price point, it’s perfect to add to your lattes, smoothies, breakfast bowls, baked goods, etc.

So in a nutshell, when you are buying your matcha you want to pay attention to the origin (most good matches come from Japan), color, texture, taste, and price.

And yes, my friends, you pretty much get what you pay for.  Good ceremonial matcha can range anywhere between 25-40 per gram.

Once you choose a matcha home you want to store it in a cool dry place, it’s extremely sensitive to both light and heat which is why good quality matcha is usually sold in foil or a dark container.

Keeping it in the fridge freezer is a good idea, especially if you do not drink it every day.

There are lots of different ways you can incorporate matcha into your diet, it’s super versatile. You can add it to smoothies, pancakes, oatmeal, chia pudding, cookies, muffins, you name it!  People are making matcha everything these days.

How To Make Matcha Tea

Those who drink matcha often like to use an official matcha-making kit which includes a matcha bowl  (chawan) with a bamboo whisk (chasen) and scoop (chashaku).

But if you don’t have all the fancy tools you can do the exact same thing with a spouted cup (or type of wide mug), a small whisk (or if really desperate a fork will do), and a teaspoon.

For an 8 ounce cup start with 1 teaspoon of matcha powder, you can run it through a fine-mesh sifter to help break up the clumps so you have creamier, frothier matcha.

Then add a couple of ounces of hot water, you want your water to be just before boiling. Technically speaking it should be at 175 f, steamy/just before boiling is really all you need to aim for.

Grab your whisk and begin moving in an M or W motion to whip the matcha until it starts to create a thick green paste and becomes frothy.  This will take one to two minutes.

Note: if you are using a metal whisk you may not get as much froth as you would if you were using a bamboo whisk.

Once your froth has formed, add another 4-6 ounces of water and enjoy.

How To Make A Matcha Latte

Now if you wanted to make a Matcha Latte, you would do everything exactly the same right up until you’ve created your foam and then instead of adding water, you would add a teaspoon of your favorite sweeter and 6 ounces of steamed milk, any milk you fancy will work, so pick what works best for you and your health style.
